Gearhead Misc - When Does the Gearhead Oil Need to Be Changed?

All Parker gearheads ship lubricated unless ordered as custom.

Lubrication change is typically not necessary and the seal will need to be changed before the lubrication needs to be changed. For the most part, you can leave the lubricant in for the life of the product as long as the gearbox is not leaking.

Typically the only time the lubricant breaks down is if it is exposed to extreme conditions (temperatures).

Seal life is more dependent on friction wear of the seal lip against the rubbing surface, such as the output seal rubbing against output shaft, input seal rubbing against the out diameter of the pinion gear. O-rings don't typically wear out between housing surfaces but can dry at elevated temperatures (180C).

Temperature can also play a role in it over time. The proper oil fill within the gearhead engages the seals and prevents premature seal failure.

Parker gearheads are precision gearheads and should not be disassembled in the field. We do offer repairs and an expedited service for urgent repairs. Contact your local Parker Automation Technology Center (ATC) for repair Return Material Authorization (RMA) number to have the gearhead serviced.

For the Stealth Gen I oil fill level, see the user guide (on the product page).

Before July 2002, the Stealth Gen I gearheads part numbers either ended with nothing after the ratio for standard backlash units, or -LB for low backlash units.

After July 2002, the Gen I gearheads were internally redesigned for oil fill for longer life. The part numbers then ended in -SH, -SU, -SD, -SE, -SF for standard backlash and the orientation (horizontal, up, down, E/F for right-angle);  or for low backlash units -LH, -LU, -LD, -LE, -LF.
