Can I Use the Motor in Vertical Applications?

Yes. Ideally, you will also want to use a counterbalance or brake system.

A mechanical counterweight can be provided designed into the positioner. It may include the weight on the back side of the positioner or on the same rail system as used by the coils. In the latter situation, stroke loss would be equal to the length of the weight.

A pneumatic counterbalance can be provided integrated as part of the positioner as a custom product. Experience has shown the pneumatic counterbalance to provide the best dynamic performance.

Another option is for a spring connected to the coil. This could also be provided as a custom product.

A linear brake is also available as a custom product. This is a pneumatic brake that clamps onto the bearing rail. This is better suited than a spring or counterbalance for longer travels or for machines that already have compressed air. This is a static brake for holding the load; it is not a dynamic brake.

For WinTips sizing, the external acceleration should be set to -1 G for vertical applications for the linear brake option. For the counterweighted/counterbalanced options, the external acceleration is 0G and the weight is the load connected to the coil; do not include the counterweight in the inertia.
