Servo Motor Thermal Sensors (BE, SM, MPP, P)

Many (but not all) of Parker EM&D's servo motor lines offer thermal sensor protection.  This FAQ gives some general guidelines.

There are two primary types of thermal sensors used.

Thermal Switches are simply a normally closed switch that opens up when the switch reaches a certain temperature.  The thermal switch will be designed into the stator assembly with two wires brought out for connection to your drive or controller.

Thermistors are simply temperature sensitive resistors that normally present a fixed resistance value with a sharp increase in resistance as it reaches its 'trip' point.  Again, two wires brought out for connection to your drive or controller.  PTC type thermistors (Positive Temperature Coefficient) are used.

For specific thermal switch or thermistor specifications contact our Applications Engineering support team at pumptechsupport@parker.com or 937-644-3915 with your full servo motor model number.

The following generalizations apply:

SM16 size motors do not include any thermal sensor protection.

SM23 motors with FL/FO/MS/LC connector options include thermal switches

SM23 motors with PS connector option include thermistors

BE16 size motors do not include any thermal sensor protection

BE23/34 size motors with FL/FO/MS/LC connector options include thermal switches

BE23/34 size motors with PS connector option include thermistors

MPP motors (all sizes) include thermistors

Motors with Hyperface DSL feedback type do not include any thermal sensor protection regardless of size

P Series motors do not include any thermal sensor protection regardless of size.
